Eurasian Lynx
Lynx lynx
The Eurasian lynx, Lynx lynx, is the largest lynx species and a native predator of forests and mountain regions from western Europe through Russia and into Central and northern Asia. It has long legs, broad paws, tufted ears, a short black-tipped tail, and a dense coat that may be faintly or strongly spotted. Its main prey in many European habitats is roe deer, though hares, birds, and smaller mammals also form part of the diet. Solitary and mostly crepuscular, it uses cover and large territories rather than prolonged chases.
Eurasian lynx are not domestic pets; they are managed by zoos, wildlife parks, sanctuaries, and conservation programs with secure carnivore enclosures, visual cover, den boxes, and low-stress shifting systems. Diets usually include whole prey or balanced carnivore preparations, with enrichment that encourages stalking, climbing, and scent investigation. Reintroduction projects in Europe consider prey density, road mortality, livestock conflict, and genetic sourcing. Breeding programs may track regional lineages because released animals need to fit both conservation goals and local public tolerance.
