Emperor Tamarin
Saguinus imperator
The emperor tamarin, Saguinus imperator, is a small Amazonian monkey named for its long white moustache. It lives in forested parts of Peru, Bolivia, and western Brazil, moving quickly through the mid and upper canopy in family groups. Like other tamarins, it eats fruit, insects, tree exudates, nectar, and small animal prey. The species is a cooperative breeder, and twins are common; fathers and other group members carry infants between nursing bouts.
Emperor tamarins are zoo and conservation animals, not suitable household pets. They need stable social groups, warm indoor quarters linked to complex climbing spaces, and diets that reflect their need for gum, insects, fruit, and carefully balanced supplements. Keepers watch body condition, dental health, infant care, and group compatibility closely because small callitrichids can be sensitive to stress and nutrition errors. In the wild, habitat loss and fragmentation are the main concerns, so field work focuses on forest protection, population monitoring, and reducing capture for illegal trade.
