Unclassified Variety
An unclassified variety emperor angelfish is a Pomacanthus imperator that has not been assigned to a named regional form, captive line, or clear juvenile or adult listing. The species is a large Indo-Pacific reef angelfish found around coral and rocky reefs, and most individuals in trade are wild type rather than selectively bred aquarium strains. Juvenile patterning consists of blue and white rings on a dark body; adults show yellow striping, a blue face and body, and a black mask. Transitional fish may carry elements of both patterns.
Unclassified fish should be evaluated as individual marine angelfish: alert behavior, full body condition, clean fins, and a willingness to eat prepared foods are more important than the variety name. They require a spacious, mature saltwater system, stable salinity and temperature, and rockwork that provides both shelter and grazing. A varied diet helps maintain color and weight. Because adults are assertive and sometimes coral-nipping, tankmates and reef invertebrates need to be chosen cautiously.
