Mixed Variety

A mixed variety emperor angelfish is a Pomacanthus imperator recorded without a single named color form, source line, or life-stage category. In the aquarium trade this usually points to ordinary wild-type stock, mixed collection sources, or records that combine juveniles and adults rather than a true domestic breed. Juveniles are dark blue with white and electric-blue rings, while adults develop yellow horizontal stripes, a blue body, and a dark eye mask; the dramatic change can make the same species look like two different fish.

Care depends more on size and maturity than on the mixed-variety label. Emperor angelfish need a large, established marine aquarium with excellent water quality, grazing surfaces, and a varied diet that includes marine algae, sponge-based preparations, and meaty foods. They can become territorial and may nip corals or clam mantles, so many keepers house them in fish-only or carefully planned reef systems. Captive breeding remains uncommon, and buyers should check collection condition and feeding response.
