Emerald Monitor
Varanus prasinus
The emerald monitor is a slender, egg-laying tree monitor of New Guinea and neighboring islands. Green skin crossed by thin dark lines, long clawed toes and a long prehensile tail fit its canopy lifestyle. Zoos and experienced specialists provide a tall secure enclosure with robust branches, sheltered vegetation, a basking gradient and controlled humidity.
Invertebrates and other animal foods form its diet. Its green appearance should not obscure the distinct Biak emerald tree monitor, which has a different range and pattern.
