Egyptian Tortoise
Testudo kleinmanni
The Egyptian tortoise is a small, egg-laying tortoise native to North African coastal desert habitats. Its pale tan shell and small dark triangular plastral marks help distinguish it from larger Mediterranean tortoises. Specialist and conservation collections maintain captive lines. Housing needs dry sheltered ground, basking choices, water and a nesting area with closely managed climate. It is listed under the US Endangered Species Act and in CITES Appendix I.
