Eastern Pine Snake
Pituophis melanoleucus
The eastern pine snake is an egg-laying North American snake associated with sandy woodland and open habitats. Its pale body bears dark blotches, and the snout has an enlarged rostral scale suited to digging. It is maintained by specialist hobby collections. Housing needs secure floor space, burrowable substrate, concealed retreats, water and a controlled thermal gradient. Northern, Florida and black pine forms occur within this species; the black pine subspecies is listed under the US Endangered Species Act, and local protection varies.
