Eastern Mud Turtle
Kinosternon subrubrum
The eastern mud turtle is an egg-laying turtle of shallow wetlands and quiet freshwater in the eastern United States. Its small oval shell is usually smooth and brown, and the hinged underside can partly close around the limbs. It is maintained by specialist hobby and zoo collections. Housing needs clean shallow water, easy access to sheltered land, basking and nesting space. The western mud turtle Kinosternon sonoriense is a separate species.
