Unknown Strain
Unknown strain discoid roach describes Blaberus discoidalis whose colony history has been lost or was never supplied. The animals may be perfectly typical discoids, but their source, selection history, and any mixing with other captive lines are not known. Discoid roaches are broad, oval, warm-climate cockroaches with winged adults, sturdy nymphs, and live-bearing reproduction, making them a common alternative feeder where this species is allowed. Color differences within a bin often reflect age, sex, and molt stage rather than a fixed strain.
Use unknown-strain stock for general feeding or educational display, not for maintaining pedigreed colonies. A stable bin needs warmth, airflow, hiding surface, and clean food; crowding and damp waste quickly lead to odor and mite problems. Before adding them to an established colony, isolate a sample and confirm the species, since several Blaberus roaches look broadly similar to non-specialists. Never release surplus roaches outdoors, and be cautious about pesticide exposure when gut-loading them for sensitive reptiles or amphibians.
