Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain discoid roach is Blaberus discoidalis without a named colony line, locality, or selected trait attached to it. In the feeder trade, most discoid roaches are maintained for reliable reproduction and size rather than for documented genetic differences. Their usual colors range from tan and orange-brown to darker brown with banding or spotting, while nymphs and fresh molts can look much lighter. The label unclassified strain signals that the roaches are the species, not a recognized variety.
This designation suits keepers who need a practical feeder colony, but it is not appropriate for projects that require traceable origin. House them in escape-resistant bins with screened ventilation, warm temperatures, upright egg flats, and food kept dry enough to avoid souring. Produce, water gel, or other moisture sources should be replaced before mold develops. Avoid mixing an unclassified colony into a named line if you are trying to preserve that line, and check local rules before acquiring feeder roaches.
