Dice Snake
Natrix tessellata
The dice snake is an egg-laying Eurasian snake strongly associated with freshwater. Its gray or olive body often bears a checkerboard of dark marks, and it lacks the usual pale collar of grass snakes. Specialist collections maintain this fish-hunting species. Housing needs clean accessible water together with dry retreats, basking land and a controlled thermal gradient. Local populations vary in pattern, and identity should not rely on a single color character.
