Desert Horned Viper
Cerastes cerastes
The desert horned viper is an egg-laying North African viper of sandy and stony desert habitats. Adults have a short, heavy sand-colored body with dark blotches; the raised scales above the eyes may be present or absent. Specialist collections need secure accommodation with dry retreats, burrowing substrate and a controlled thermal gradient. Its venom is medically significant and dangerous-animal permits can apply. Cerastes gasperetti is a separate species.
