Degu
Octodon degus
The degu, Octodon degus, is a social, diurnal rodent from central Chile, where it lives in burrow systems in scrub and semi-arid habitats. Degus are brownish agouti animals with rounded ears, a brush-tipped tail, strong digging behavior, and constantly growing teeth. Their daytime activity and vocal group life make them unusually engaging among small rodents, and they are also used in research because of their social behavior and metabolic traits.
Pet degus need same-species companionship, a large chew-resistant enclosure, deep bedding or digging space, safe wheels, branches, and regular dust baths. Their diet should be high in hay and fiber, with low-sugar pellets and limited treats, because they are prone to dental trouble and sugar-related health problems. Gentle daily interaction helps them become confident, but tails must never be grabbed because the skin can slip. Some places restrict ownership due to escape and invasive-species concerns.
