Indonesian Origin
Indonesian origin cynomolgus macaques are Macaca fascicularis whose ancestry traces to Indonesia or Indonesian-sourced breeding colonies. They are the same species as the long-tailed or crab-eating macaque, a medium-sized Southeast Asian monkey with a long tail, brown to gray-brown coat, and adaptable social behavior. In research and colony records, geographic origin is used because island and mainland populations can differ in genetics, body size, disease background, and other traits relevant to study design.
These macaques are not suitable companion animals and are generally held only by licensed research centers, breeding facilities, zoos, or sanctuaries. Management requires social housing when compatible, strong containment, veterinary screening, quarantine procedures, and daily behavioral enrichment. Origin records are important for colony planning and for interpreting biomedical data, but they do not replace individual assessment. Facilities also consider conservation and welfare issues, since long-tailed macaques face pressure from habitat loss, conflict with people, and capture for trade in parts of their range.
