Cuming's Water Monitor
Varanus cumingi
Cuming's water monitor is a large, egg-laying monitor from the Philippines, notably Mindanao and nearby islands. Adults have a yellow head and conspicuous yellow bands or spots against dark scales, with a long, laterally compressed tail. Zoo and specialist collections provide substantial secure space, water, sturdy climbing surfaces, dry retreats and a controlled tropical heat gradient.
It eats animal foods and needs management appropriate to a powerful monitor. It is distinct from other Philippine water monitors; older records place it under Varanus salvator.
