Crystal Red Shrimp

Caridina cantonensis

The Crystal Red Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) is a captivating freshwater crustacean esteemed by aquarists for its vivid coloration and intricate patterns. Originating from the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, this shrimp species is distinguished by its striking red and white banded body, created through selective breeding. The intensity and arrangement of these colors can vary, producing a range of grades that enthusiasts celebrate and showcase in aquariums. Crystal Red Shrimp are relatively small, typically growing up to 2.5-3.5 centimeters in length.

These shrimp thrive in well-maintained aquariums, requiring specific water parameters with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral pH, temperatures between 20-25°C (68-77°F), and clean, well-filtered water. Their diets consist mainly of algae, biofilm, and sinking shrimp pellets, while supplemental feeding with blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can promote health and vibrant coloration. Crystal Red Shrimps are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them excellent additions to community tanks, though they should be housed with non-predatory fish or other compatible shrimp species to avoid stress.

As a social species, Crystal Red Shrimps do better in groups, which also enhances their natural behavior and breeding potential. Their fascinating grooming and foraging behaviors, combined with their vivid appearance, make them an attractive and engaging addition to any aquarist's repertoire. Due to their sensitivity to water quality and strict care requirements, they are best suited for hobbyists with some experience in shrimp keeping.
