Cottonmouth
Agkistrodon piscivorus
The cottonmouth is a live-bearing, semiaquatic pit viper of the southeastern and south-central United States. Adults are heavy-bodied and often dark, with a broad head and pale mouth lining; young animals show clearer bands. Specialist zoological housing needs secure retreats and access to clean water and dry land. Its venom is medically significant and dangerous-animal permits can apply. The Florida cottonmouth Agkistrodon conanti is treated as a separate species.
