Unknown Variety

An unknown variety copperband butterflyfish is a Chelmon rostratus whose seller, keeper, or record did not specify a collection locality or trade form. That is common, because copperbands are not normally bred into domestic strains and the aquarium trade deals mainly in wild-type fish. Adults have a disk-shaped body, elongated beak-like snout, copper bands, and a false eyespot that can draw attention away from the head.

When the variety is unknown, focus on husbandry history: how long the fish has been in captivity, what it eats, and whether it was quarantined. This species can be delicate for beginners because starvation after import is a common problem. Offer frequent small meals of meaty marine foods and keep it with calm fish that do not outcompete it. It may help control pest anemones, but that should not be the only reason for purchase, since individual feeding behavior and reef compatibility vary.
