Common Spiny-Tailed Iguana
Ctenosaura similis
The common spiny-tailed iguana is a large, egg-laying iguana native to Mexico and Central America. Adult gray bodies with dark bands, a dorsal crest and rings of stout tail spines distinguish it from a green iguana. It uses rocky shelter and feeds on both vegetation and animal foods, especially when young.
Zoo and experienced hobby keepers need substantial secure space, strong climbing and basking surfaces and a controlled heat and light gradient. Its powerful tail and bite make calm, planned management more suitable than casual handling.
