Unknown Breed
An unknown breed common quail is best read as a common quail or coturnix-type quail whose strain was not supplied. Coturnix coturnix is the Eurasian common quail, a small brown bird with buff streaking and a secretive ground habit. It has not been divided into the kind of formal breeds seen in chickens, and the pet and farm trade sometimes uses common quail for related domestic quail. White or wild-type plumage alone cannot confirm ancestry.
When the breed is unknown, assess the bird as an individual: sound legs, clear eyes, appropriate weight, and calm response to handling are more useful than a label. Housing should be escape-proof and quiet, with a covered top because startled quail fly straight up. Captive quail should be fed a gamebird ration rather than chicken scratch, and breeding pairs or groups need enough cover to limit chasing. Check local rules before keeping or moving true common quail, especially near wild populations.
