Common Grass Snake
Natrix natrix
The common grass snake is an egg-laying Eurasian snake often found near freshwater. It is usually gray or olive with dark markings and often a pale collar behind the head, though collar appearance varies. Specialist collections maintain this active species. Housing needs secure terrestrial space, cover, clean water and a controlled temperate thermal gradient. The barred grass snake Natrix helvetica and Iberian grass snake N. astreptophora are separate species.
