Common Golden Tegu
Tupinambis teguixin
The common golden tegu is an egg-laying tegu from tropical northern South America. Black and yellow-gold bands, a muscular body and a long banded tail distinguish it from the black-and-white Argentine tegu. It is kept by experienced reptile keepers who can provide a large secure enclosure, digging space, retreats and a basking gradient.
Its varied diet includes animal prey and some plant foods. The name black tegu is used inconsistently in trade, so scientific identity and provenance are more reliable than a seller's color label.
