Common Giant Plated Lizard
Matobosaurus validus
The common giant plated lizard is a large, egg-laying lizard of rocky country in southern Africa. Broad overlapping armor plates, a lateral skin fold and a heavy tapering tail give it a different build from a monitor; adults are generally dark with lighter flecks. Zoo and specialist collections provide ground space, secure rock shelters, basking opportunities and a controlled light and heat gradient.
It takes plant material and small animal foods. Older records use Gerrhosaurus validus, a useful search name for the same species.
