Common Egg Eater
Dasypeltis scabra
The common egg eater is an egg-laying African snake of savanna and grassland. It has a small rounded head, keeled scales and often a chain of dark rhombic markings. Specialized internal structures allow it to swallow bird eggs and expel the collapsed shells. Specialist keepers need a dependable supply of appropriately sized eggs. Secure housing also needs retreats, climbing structure and a controlled thermal gradient; it is not a rodent-feeding snake.
