Common Chuckwalla
Sauromalus ater
The common chuckwalla is a broad-bodied, egg-laying desert iguana from the western United States and northwestern Mexico. Loose folds of skin, a thick tail base and subdued gray, brown or reddish coloring distinguish it from spiny-tailed iguanas. It shelters in rock cracks and can inflate its body to wedge itself in place.
Zoos and experienced hobby keepers provide secure rocky retreats, basking space and a controlled desert heat and light gradient. It eats chiefly vegetation, with occasional insects, rather than a monitor-style meat diet.
