Common Caiman
Caiman crocodilus
The common or spectacled caiman is an egg-laying crocodilian of tropical American wetlands. A bony ridge between the eyes gives it the spectacled name; adults have an armored olive-brown body and broad tail. Zoological housing needs substantial water, land, secure barriers and trained management, and crocodilian permits can apply. US Endangered Species Act protection varies by subspecies. CITES Appendix I applies to the Apaporis subspecies; most others are Appendix II.
