Cinereous Vulture

Aegypius monachus

The cinereous vulture, Aegypius monachus, is a massive Old World vulture found from southwestern Europe across parts of the Caucasus and Asia. It is also called the Eurasian black vulture or monk vulture, though its plumage is usually dark brown rather than true black. Broad wings, a short wedge-shaped tail, a heavy bill, and a bare bluish-gray head suit it for soaring over open country and feeding on large carcasses. Unlike cliff-nesting griffon vultures in many areas, cinereous vultures often build bulky nests in trees, though nesting sites vary by region.

Care and management are mostly in the hands of raptor centers, zoos, and conservation programs. Large aviaries must allow strong flight, safe perching, seclusion during breeding, and diets based on appropriately sourced carcass or whole-prey items. Field conservation addresses poisoning, lead ammunition, electrocution, food shortages, and disturbance near nests. In Europe, reintroduction and supplemental feeding have helped some populations recover, but those tools require disease control and careful placement to avoid creating new risks. Rehabilitation teams also need permits and specialist veterinary support because vultures are long-lived birds with slow breeding cycles.
