Chinese Crocodile Lizard
Shinisaurus crocodilurus
The Chinese crocodile lizard is a live-bearing, semiaquatic lizard from forest streams in southern China and northern Vietnam. Raised scales along its tail, a broad head and red-orange belly markings give it a miniature crocodile appearance. Zoos and specialist breeders provide clean water, branches above it, dense cover and a controlled forest climate; Smithsonian keepers feed insects, worms and snails.
It is a lizard, not a crocodilian. CITES Appendix I restricts international trade, making lawful captive origin and transfer paperwork essential.
