Unclassified Variety
An unclassified-variety cherry barb is a cherry barb, Puntius titteya, recorded without assignment to a specific color variety such as wild type or albino. This can happen when fish arrive from a wholesaler under a general name, when juveniles have not colored up enough for confident sorting, or when a group does not match a breeder's preferred labels. The species remains the same small Sri Lankan cyprinid: males can become deep red, females are usually paler and fuller-bodied, and both sexes may show a dark line along the side in wild-type fish.
In aquariums, unclassified variety status has little effect on day-to-day husbandry. A planted or well-covered tank, a group rather than a lone fish, and gentle tankmates suit them better than crowded, aggressive community setups. For breeding projects, wait until mature color and eye pigment are clear before assigning a variety, and keep notes on parents if you want predictable albino or wild-type offspring. For display tanks, healthy behavior matters more than a precise variety label.
