Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain of catla is a Catla catla stock whose genetic or hatchery background has not been assigned to a named line. The label may be used when fingerlings come from local broodfish, when records are missing, or when a batch contains fish from several sources but has not been formally described as mixed. The fish are still catla, a fast-growing Indian major carp recognized by its broad head, upturned mouth, and preference for feeding in the upper water column.
For farmers and hatchery managers, unclassified stock should be treated as undocumented rather than inferior by default. Keep separate records once the fish arrive, note growth, survival, maturity, and any disease issues, and avoid using them as broodstock for a selective program without knowing relatedness. Good pond preparation, moderate stocking density, oxygen management, and careful transport have a larger effect on early results than the strain name. If future breeding is planned, genetic testing or replacement with documented broodstock may be worthwhile.
