Cascabel Rattlesnake
Crotalus durissus
The cascabel rattlesnake is a live-bearing South American pit viper associated with open habitats. It has a robust patterned body, dark longitudinal neck stripes and a tail rattle. Specialist collections maintain this species with secure containment, dry retreats and a controlled thermal gradient. Its venom can cause life-threatening illness and dangerous-animal licensing can apply. Several Central American snakes once grouped under this name are now recognized separately.
