Carpet Python
Morelia spilota
The carpet python (Morelia spilota) is a variable python complex from Australia and nearby New Guinea, with forms such as jungle, coastal, diamond, and inland carpet pythons known in the reptile hobby. Patterns range from bold black-and-yellow banding to speckled browns, olives, and grays that blend with trees, rocks, and forest edges. These snakes are semi-arboreal to arboreal in many settings, hunting birds, mammals, and reptiles by ambush and constriction. Captive lines include locality-based animals and selected color or pattern projects.
Carpet pythons are popular with experienced keepers because they stay more manageable than giant pythons while still needing serious housing. Enclosures should be secure, well ventilated, and furnished with climbing branches, hides, and a heat gradient suited to the form being kept. Young snakes may be defensive, and adults can have strong feeding responses, so handling and feeding routines should be deliberate. Breeders should label locality and cross information honestly. Australian wildlife export and possession rules are strict, and local laws elsewhere may also regulate python ownership.
