Carpet Python

Morelia spilota

The Carpet Python (Morelia spilota) is a non-venomous species of python native to Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Known for its striking and diverse pattern that resembles a woven carpet, this snake displays colors ranging from olive and gold to black and white, with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage in their natural habitat. Adult Carpet Pythons typically measure between 2 to 4 meters in length, although size can vary greatly depending on their specific subspecies and region. These pythons are primarily arboreal but are also comfortable on the ground, dwelling in environments ranging from forests and savannas to rocky outcrops and even suburban areas.

Carpet Pythons are primarily nocturnal hunters, preying on a variety of animals including birds, mammals, and occasionally reptiles, using constriction to subdue their prey. They play a crucial role in their ecosystems by controlling the populations of their prey species. During the breeding season, which usually occurs in spring, females lay clutches of eggs and often exhibit maternal care by coiling around them to regulate temperature until they hatch. Known for their adaptability, Carpet Pythons are popular in the reptile pet trade, though they require careful handling and suitable environmental conditions to thrive in captivity.
