Unclassified Variety

An unclassified variety cardinal tetra is a cardinal tetra without a named color morph, locality strain, or breeding line attached to it. For most aquarium fish sold under this label, the appearance is the standard wild type of Paracheirodon axelrodi: a slender body with a bright blue lateral stripe and a deep red stripe extending from the head area toward the tail. The species comes from warm, acidic waters in northern South America, especially the Rio Negro and Orinoco drainage, and is often collected as well as captive bred.

The unclassified label is useful when records are missing or when a dealer has not separated fish by source. It should not be treated as evidence of a new morph. Husbandry is the normal cardinal tetra routine: keep a sizable shoal, avoid sharp swings in water chemistry, provide shelter and dimmer areas, and feed fine prepared or frozen foods. Breeders trying to maintain locality or strain information should keep unclassified fish separate from documented stock so fry are not later misrepresented.
