Burgundy Goliath Birdeater
Theraphosa stirmi
The burgundy Goliath birdeater is a very large, egg-laying terrestrial tarantula with brown to burgundy coloration. Its size makes spacious floor-level housing and protection from falls especially important. Provide deep burrowing substrate, a large sheltered retreat, drinking water and well-ventilated humid conditions that avoid stagnation. Feed appropriately sized prey while monitoring condition. Its irritating hairs and defensive responses make minimal disturbance preferable to handling.
