Manouria emys
The brown tortoise is a large forest tortoise from South and Southeast Asia. Its brown to dark shell, heavy limbs and broad feet suit life on the forest floor. Females build and guard a leaf-litter nest for their eggs, an unusual behavior among tortoises. It is maintained in specialist and zoo collections. Housing needs extensive shaded ground, deep litter, access to water and a controlled warm, moist environment rather than a dry desert setup.
