Brown Basilisk
Basiliscus vittatus
The brown basilisk is a long-tailed, egg-laying lizard native to Mexico and Central America. Its brown body carries pale lateral stripes, and adult males develop a head crest. It inhabits vegetation near water and is also established outside its native range through introductions.
Experienced keepers provide generous climbing and floor space, water access, cover and a controlled basking gradient. It is distinct from the bright green Basiliscus plumifrons. Secure housing matters for this agile species; keeping a basilisk does not justify releasing it outdoors.
