Borneo Earless Monitor
Lanthanotus borneensis
The Borneo earless monitor is a secretive, egg-laying lizard from Borneo, recorded in Sarawak and West Kalimantan. Its small eyes, lack of external ear openings, short limbs and rows of raised dorsal tubercles give it a distinctive appearance. Specialist and zoo care uses sheltered, moist terrestrial space with access to water and carefully controlled conditions.
CITES Appendix II includes a zero export quota for wild specimens for commercial purposes. Captive-bred claims therefore need reliable provenance; this animal is not a smaller form of a Varanus monitor.
