Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a practical label for a bobwhite quail whose strain, color line, or breeder history was not recorded. It does not mean the bird is a different species; it is still treated as Colinus virginianus unless identification suggests otherwise. Bobwhites can show wild-type brown, reddish, white, silver, or other captive color patterns, and similar-looking birds may come from unrelated lines.
For keepers, unknown ancestry mainly affects breeding decisions and buyer expectations. These birds can be managed like other bobwhites in covered pens with hiding cover, dry footing, clean water, and a high-protein gamebird diet, but they should be described honestly if sold or rehomed. Unknown-line birds are usually unsuitable for formal conservation release or locality-based projects. Permits may still be needed, especially where bobwhites are regulated as native wildlife or game birds.
