Northern
The northern form is the classic bobwhite quail of eastern and central North America, the bird behind the clear bob-white whistle. In aviculture and gamebird listings, northern usually refers to standard Colinus virginianus stock rather than a show breed. Birds are compact, short-tailed, and mottled brown for ground camouflage; males commonly show a white throat and eye stripe, while females have a buffier face.
Northern bobwhites are raised in coveys for education, conservation work, field-dog training, hunting preserves, and private aviaries. They need secure outdoor housing with room to flush, places to hide, protection from damp drafts, and feed formulated for gamebirds. Handling is kept minimal because stressed birds can injure themselves. Anyone buying them for release should check native-gamebird rules, disease requirements, and whether the stock is appropriate for the local area, since ornamental color lines and mixed farm stock are poor choices for habitat restoration.
