Mixed Breed

Mixed breed in bobwhite quail usually means a bird comes from blended or undocumented captive stock rather than a recognized breed. Bobwhites are small North American gamebirds, most closely associated in captivity with the northern bobwhite, Colinus virginianus. Captive lines may carry wild-type brown patterning or mutations sold as auburn, white, silver, blond, or golden, but color names are not a reliable map of ancestry and may vary by breeder.

These quail are kept for aviaries, eggs, dog training, hunting preserves, and sometimes release projects. Management is closer to gamebird husbandry than pet bird keeping: secure flight pens, dry sheltered areas, brushy cover, and a suitable gamebird ration matter more than hand-taming. Because bobwhites are native game birds in many regions, permits and release rules can apply. Mixed stock is best kept for private flocks or production, not conservation releases requiring local genetics.
