Bluetail Monitor
Varanus doreanus
The bluetail monitor is an egg-laying monitor of the New Guinea region. Pale speckling, a long neck and a blue-toned tail, especially in younger animals, help identify it. Older names and reported ranges can include closely related monitors, so origin matters. Experienced keepers provide a large secure enclosure with climbing structure, shelters, water and a controlled thermal gradient.
It is a powerful predatory lizard. Its subdued yellow-brown body differs from the much brighter quince monitor, and tail color can become less conspicuous with age.
