Blue-Headed Pionus

Pionus menstruus

The blue-headed pionus (Pionus menstruus) is a South American parrot with a deep blue head, green body, red undertail coverts, and a stockier, quieter manner than many amazons or macaws. It ranges through forest, woodland, and edge habitats in much of northern and central South America, feeding on fruits, seeds, blossoms, and berries. Several subspecies or regional forms are recognized, and the richness of head color can vary with age, sex, condition, and origin.

As companion parrots, blue-headed pionus are often chosen by people wanting a medium-sized bird, but they still require daily attention, roomy housing, and steady training. Their diet should include formulated pellets, vegetables, fruit in moderation, and safe chew items rather than seed-heavy feeding. Good ventilation matters because pionus parrots can produce a noticeable musky odor and fine feather dust. Breeders and buyers should track hatch origin, parentage, and temperament, especially when placing birds that may live for several decades.
