Blue-Fronted Amazon
Amazona aestiva
The blue-fronted amazon, Amazona aestiva, is a medium-sized green parrot from South America, especially Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. The amount of blue on the forehead and yellow around the face varies widely between individuals and regional forms, which is one reason captive birds can look different under the same common name. Wild birds use woodland, palm groves, gallery forest, and agricultural edges, feeding on seeds, fruits, blossoms, and cultivated crops when available.
In aviculture, blue-fronted amazons are valued for strong voices, intelligence, and the potential for close bonds, but they are not low-maintenance pets. They need large cages or aviaries, daily exercise, chewable enrichment, bathing, and a diet based on formulated food and vegetables rather than sunflower seed mixes. Mature birds can become territorial, especially during breeding condition, so handling must respect body language. Responsible buyers verify legal captive origin and long-term placement, since many amazons can outlive changes in a household.
