Black Tree Monitor
Varanus beccarii
The black tree monitor is an arboreal monitor from Indonesia's Aru Islands. Adults are black, with a slender neck, long clawed toes and a strongly prehensile tail; young animals have a different pattern. It lays eggs and is kept by experienced tree-monitor breeders and zoos. Captive enclosures should be tall and securely furnished with climbing branches, concealed retreats and a suitable humidity and temperature gradient.
Its tail is an important climbing structure. This species is distinct from the green emerald monitor and the patterned Biak tree monitor.
