Black-Capped Lory
Lorius lory
The black-capped lory (Lorius lory) is a bright nectar-feeding parrot from New Guinea and nearby islands. It has a black crown, red body, green wings, blue markings, and regional subspecies that vary in the amount and placement of color. Like other lories, it has a brush-tipped tongue for taking nectar and pollen, though it also eats fruit, soft plant material, and small amounts of other foods. Its fast movement and strong voice make it conspicuous in aviaries.
Aviculture for black-capped lories is different from keeping seed-eating parrots. They need fresh nectar diets, fruit, clean water, and frequent cage cleaning because liquid food produces wet droppings and sticky residue. Seed-only diets are inappropriate and can lead to health problems. Pairs and singles need flight space, bathing opportunities, chewable enrichment, and careful monitoring of aggression during breeding. Buyers should look for captive-bred birds with clear paperwork and should understand that a lory's color comes with noise, mess, and specialized nutrition. Import rules may apply because wild parrots are regulated in trade.
