Mixed Strain
Mixed strain bighead carp are Hypophthalmichthys nobilis descended from more than one brood line, hatchery source, or geographic origin. Bighead carp are large Asian filter-feeding fish with a deep body, oversized head, and low-set eyes, raised mainly for food-fish aquaculture and sometimes used in research on plankton-feeding carp. A mixed strain is not a formal breed; it signals that the stock may combine growth, survival, or availability traits from different sources.
These fish belong in managed ponds, research facilities, or regulated aquaculture systems, not home aquariums. They feed heavily on plankton and need large volumes of productive water, careful transport, and secure containment. Spawning is usually managed in hatcheries with controlled conditions rather than casual pond breeding. Because bighead carp are invasive in some regions, stocking, movement, and possession may require permits and escape prevention.
