Bell's Hingeback Tortoise

Bell's hingeback tortoise is an African terrestrial turtle whose rear carapace can hinge downward to protect the hindquarters. Adults have a brown or tan domed shell and sturdy walking legs. It lays eggs and is maintained by specialist tortoise collections. Housing needs usable ground space, shelters, access to water and a controlled basking gradient. Several tortoises once grouped under this name are now separate species, so older range and trade labels need care.
