Beefalo
Bison bison x Bos taurus
Beefalo is a managed hybrid and composite type developed from domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and American bison (Bison bison). The name is used most clearly for animals bred toward a defined balance of cattle productivity and bison ancestry, though casual use can cover a range of cattle-bison crosses. Animals may show heavier forequarters, dense coats, strong muscling, and hardier behavior than many cattle lines, while still being selected for beef production and tractable ranch handling.
Raising beefalo is closer to specialized cattle ranching than exotic pet keeping. Fencing, chutes, trailers, and handlers must account for animals that may be more athletic and reactive than ordinary beef cattle. Breeders track ancestry percentages, fertility, temperament, carcass traits, and registry rules because the label can otherwise become vague. Nutrition is usually pasture and hay based, with mineral support and routine herd health planning. Marketing also requires care: buyers may want beefalo for meat characteristics, climate tolerance, or novelty, but the actual value depends on documented breeding and practical ranch performance.
