Barramundi

Lates calcarifer

Barramundi (Lates calcarifer), also called Asian sea bass, is a large predatory fish native to northern Australia, Southeast Asia, and Indo-Pacific coastal river systems. It tolerates fresh, brackish, and marine water, moving between estuaries, rivers, floodplains, and coastal areas as conditions change. Adults have a deep silver body, large mouth, and strong swimming ability. In many populations, fish mature first as males and larger older fish become females.

People raise barramundi in ponds, tanks, sea cages, and recirculating aquaculture systems for food markets. Good production depends on warm water, high oxygen, careful grading by size, and feed management that prevents bullying or cannibalism among juveniles. Public aquariums and large private systems need covered, spacious tanks because barramundi can strike prey and jump with force. Stocking in open waters should be handled through local fisheries rules, especially outside the native range. For consumers and growers, origin, water system, and harvest size often matter more than the simple barramundi label.
