Unknown Strain
Unknown strain Atlantic cod are Gadus morhua whose strain, population source, or hatchery line is not recorded. The fish may be wild-origin, hatchery-produced, mixed, or descended from a selected program, but the available record does not identify which. Because Atlantic cod strains are usually defined by origin or program history, visual traits such as mottled color, body size, or condition cannot reliably fill the gap.
For aquaculture and research, unknown strain is a practical warning. Growth data, disease observations, and breeding results are harder to interpret when the source is missing. Facilities should record current tank, tag, age estimate, health status, and any transfer history to prevent further loss of information. Husbandry still depends on cold marine water, oxygen management, appropriate feed, and low-stress handling. Unknown-strain cod may be acceptable for display or limited holding, but breeding, comparative trials, or conservation decisions need clearer provenance when possible.
